Is CF Montreal the Most Promising Team in the MLS?
The MLS 2025 is currently underway, and in our opinion, CF Montreal could be one of the most promising teams in the Eastern Conference. You might read that and scratch your head, seeing as, at the time of writing, they’re currently placed 15th in the table.
But as ever with football, not all the results are black and white. Yes, CF Montreal are placed 15th, but for those who watched the games, they’ll know the team is showing a lot of promise. To the point where they could even be contenders in the latter stages.
Signs of Improvement
Now, when we say CF Montreal could be a genuine contender, you have to realise we aren’t telling you to run to the nearest sportsbook and put money on them. In fact, you’d struggle to find any online casino with odds that favour Montreal making the playoffs – let alone going deep. The point is, it’s nearly impossible.
But with CF Montreal’s form and promise, that ‘nearly’ has become very tantalising. Let’s look at their first game against Atlanta United FC, which they narrowly lost 3-2. They showed in that game that they could compete with high-calibre teams, and although they conceded goals – defensive frailty has become a theme throughout this whole tournament – they also demonstrated grit, pace, and attacking intent.
In other words, they kept coming back. There was no member of that team who thought they were down and out until the final whistle blew, and that demonstrates the same grit and courage it would take to work their way up the table.
Since then, they’ve also picked up two notable wins. The first was away to New York City FC, which they won 1-0. The other win was away to Houston Dynamo, which they won 3-1. The key theme here is that they were away both times.
It’s hard enough beating a team like New York City, who are currently ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference table. But it’s even harder to beat them in the Yankee Stadium, a notoriously tough venue with one of the most passionate home crowds in the entire MLS. The same was true with the Houston Dynamo, reinforcing that Montreal can deliver strong performances away from home when the pressure is on.
The Route to the Playoffs
The challenge now is for CF Montreal to bring that passion and intent to all their other games. And they’ll need to, because there can’t be any hiccups from here on out. In order to get to the playoffs, their challenge is to win at least ten of their remaining 16 matches.
If they do that, they’ll reach around 43 to 45 points, which should be enough to secure a playoff spot – so long as the other teams ranked 9th to 14th don’t put together long winning streaks or consistently accumulate points to widen the gap. As we’ve just mentioned, CF Montreal has the power to do it, especially with players like Prince Owusu and Jalen Neal leading the pack. It’s unlikely, sure. But not impossible!
